Longstanding tradition claims that Bateman's was built by a Wealden ironmaster. It is difficult now to appreciate that Burwash was ever anything other than a village, but the Normans saw the growth of small scale iron production that lasted 4 centuries.

This 3.4 km walk is easy-going and within reach of all fitness levels. Most walkers finish in around 45 minutes.

The route nearly completes a loop, with start and end points within easy walking distance of each other. Minimal logistics required.

As a Local Walking Network (LWN) route, this trail has a strong community character. It serves both regular local walkers and visitors discovering the area for the first time.
