Te Araroa’s inaugural plaque revealed on 7 February 1995: a local volcanic stone embedded with lines from A R D Fairburn’s poem ‘To a Friend in the Wilderness’ I could be happy, in blue and fortunate weather, Roaming the country between you and the sun.
A 21.2 km long-distance challenge suited to experienced hikers. Most complete it in around 4 hours and 43 minutes.
This is a point-to-point route, running from one location to another. Plan ahead for return transport, or consider reversing the route on your way back. Follow the TA01d waymarkers throughout to stay on the official trail line.
As a Local Walking Network (LWN) route, this trail has a strong community character. It serves both regular local walkers and visitors discovering the area for the first time.
