Otago Central branch started 1879 with 215 km done in 1907 by hardy souls using pick, shovel, dynamite, horse and cart: it transported supplies, wool and livestock. Road transport caused closure by 1990. Within 10 years a Rail Trail was started.

This 152.2 km route is a major undertaking — excellent fitness, reliable navigation, and multi-day planning are required. End-to-end time is roughly 33 hours and 50 minutes.

Point-to-point in layout, this trail takes you from A to B across the landscape. Consider your return logistics before heading out. Follow the CRT waymarkers throughout to stay on the official trail line.

As a National Walking Network (NWN) trail, this route represents a nationally recognised hiking corridor. Infrastructure and waymarking are maintained at a high standard.
