Sanctuary to Sea
The Kaiwharawhara Stream is a large system with habitat for short jaw, banded and giant kōkopu and kōaro The route passes through Otari Bush, Churchill Drive and Trelissick Park to the Hutt Road and the entrance to the sea at Te Whanganui-a-Tara.
At 8.7 km, this is a comfortable half-day walk for most hikers. At an average walking pace, plan for roughly 1 hour and 56 minutes.
As a linear trail, this route has distinct start and end points. Return transport is worth arranging in advance unless you plan to walk back the same way. The trail is officially waymarked as S2S, so look out for the trail markers along the way.
As a Regional Walking Network (RWN) route, this trail is maintained and waymarked at the regional level. It typically connects towns, villages, and natural highlights across the wider area.
