Erie Canalway Trail (Hertel Avenue to Tonawanda)

The paved off-road stage is from Hertel Avenue, north Buffalo (west of Interstate I-190) and heads north-east to Tonawanda with dramatic views of the Niagara River (the border with Canada). The stage ends at the western entrance to the Erie Canal,

Covering 15.2 km, this is a substantial hike requiring a reasonable base fitness. Most walkers complete it in about 3 hours and 23 minutes.

This linear trail moves from one end to the other without looping back. A return journey by transport — or retracing the path — is needed to get back to the start. Look for the ECT trail markings to stay on the official route.

Part of the Local Walking Network (LWN), this trail is ideal for exploring the neighbourhood landscape. It is typically well-known to local walkers and offers an authentic sense of place.
