Erie Canalway Trail (Tonawanda to Amherst)
A mostly paved and off-road stage alongside the Erie Canal with views of boats and wildlife. There are four short parts where walkers are on the shoulders of roads facing oncoming vehicle traffic. The stage ends at the Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village
Covering 16.1 km, this is a substantial hike requiring a reasonable base fitness. Most walkers complete it in about 3 hours and 35 minutes.
This linear trail moves from one end to the other without looping back. A return journey by transport — or retracing the path — is needed to get back to the start. Look for the ECT trail markings to stay on the official route.
Part of the Local Walking Network (LWN), this trail is ideal for exploring the neighbourhood landscape. It is typically well-known to local walkers and offers an authentic sense of place.
